About a week ago I was listening to the radio. They were talking about a state that was trying to make it illegal to smoke in a car with kids. Everyone that was calling in said it was government trying to micro-manage every ones life. I happen to agree with the legislation. I feel that we should be able to do what we want. However, I think if it takes someone else to show you your mistakes, then so be it. Both of my parents were smokers and we could not say anything about it. Many kids, like I was, just have to breath that nasty air. I would have been so glad if the government could have helped me not have to smell that stuff. At that age you have really no control over what happens.
I was at dinner with my family yesterday and we had to wait for a table. There were plenty of places to sit, in the smoking section, but we waited almost fifteen minutes for a table. I have enough common sense to do everything in my power to keep my kids safe from things that can possibly hurt them. I am not saying you can protect them from everything, but you can at least try. To get to the restrooms you have to walk through the smoking section to get there. That is when I saw it. There was a lady holding a baby that could not have been more than eleven months old. She had a cigarette in one hand and her daughter in the other. You could just see the smoke hanging right around that poor child's head. I feel so sorry for children that have to go through that. What can we do?
The easiest thing would be to outlaw smoking. Is that practical? Not really. The government makes so much money off of taxes it will never happen. The government also makes alot of money from insurance companies when someone gets sick from smoking. Can we make laws that can protect our kids from people who do not understand the harm they may be causing? Yes we can. I believe at this time that is a step in the right direction. There is no harm in trying to better the next generation.
If you have an opposing opinion, please let me know. I am very open minded on most things. If you have any other resolutions to this, feel free to post a comment. I will always stick up for the kids. They cannot do it for themselves. Thank you for reading my blog.
